An Evening with Jason Tako

Photo by Allison Dougherty, Harrisburg Patriot

Last week, Gallery 2318 in Camp Hill, PA hosted an evening of painting, food and fun. I was invited to give a painting demonstration and talk to a select group of people to help raise awareness for Plein Air Camp Hill and the art of plein air painting. Delicious food was catered in as the crowd discussed everything from sunny-day painting to Sonny Rollins. I demonstrated my limited primary palette technique by painting an autumn landscape inspired by a scene near Devil's Den in Gettysburg National Park. The painting was sold via silent auction and the funds donated to the Camp Hill Economic Development Group. See the article by Harrisburg Patriot contributor Allison Dougherty.

I will be participating in Plein Air Camp Hill this coming May 17-19, 2013. Be sure to come see this wonderful event and add some beautiful plein air work for your collection. There will be great food, music and the thrill of watching artists from all over the tri-state region paint "en plein air."

Dark Interior

This dark forest interior was inspired by the stream in Ricketts Glen Park in northern PA. An old stump overlooks the stream reflecting and autumn colors. A scene like this brings a feeling a peace and serenity.

New Waterfowl Painting!

This painting was inspired by some Pintail drakes another artist friend and I saw at Blackwater Wildlife Refuge during the Waterfowl Festival. I loved the play of light between the yellows and blues of the sky as well as the reflections of the ducks in the calm morning waters.

This is a little study on the Grand Canyon from our visit there almost four years ago. The depth and distance one feels at the Canyon is breathtaking.

Arizona Mountains, oil on linen panel, 8"x10"

Since I was a child I have, on occasion, visited Arizona. I love the mountains there. They rise up in the distance over the flat plains like great guardians of the desert. These mountains had such beautiful form and subtle tone from the afternoon light that I had to paint them.

Two Oaks, oil on linen, 11"x14"

The perfect little country house on a winter day. It had been there a long time given the large oak trees that had grown up around it. I can picture horses or sheep being kept just a little down the hill, children are sledding in the fresh snow while their mother is inside baking cookies. After the day is over, the family snuggles up in front of the fireplace to talk about their day and their dreams. This simple, but beautiful house perfectly symbolizes the joy of country living.

Guided Brush Sessions!!!

Jason painting en plein air at Gettysburg National Park

Spring is here!! This is the time of year when the excitement of outdoor painting (plein air painting) begins to occupy the minds of landscape artists. But it can be a challenge to capture those fleeting outdoor moments, or recreate them in the studio. Perhaps you have always wanted to take a workshop but your schedule always gets in the way. Perhaps you have always desired the one-on-one instruction that a workshop cannot provide. Perhaps you feel stuck and are not sure what you need to to do to continue your artistic growth. Then consider taking a Guided Brush Session with me.

The focus of this one-on-one session will be you and your artistic growth. We can work indoors, outdoors, tackle a challenge, critique your work, etc. Sessions can be tailored to your schedule. Most of all you will have fun while you learn a lot. There is no contract, just email and set up a time. Come as often as you like. The cost is only $25/hour. Contact me at luke_tako@yahoo.com to learn more!

Morning Drift, oil on linen panel, 9"x12"

This painting was a fun experiment in textures and brushstrokes. The morning light on the Pintail is the real subject. I have witnessed scenes like this many times, scenes that most people, including waterfowl hunters rarely get to witness. A lone duck calmly drifting on the calm morning waters of a early spring marsh, with sounds of other ducks and birds, including turkeys, off in the distance. It is an incredibly peaceful feeling. I had to get up very early and sit completely still in camouflage in order to witness this. You can experience this feeling and see this beauty on your wall everyday-without the camouflage.

Plein Air Easton and Plein Air Camp Hill!

I have been juried into Plein Air Camp Hill and Plein Air Easton! Plein Air Camp Hill takes place May 17th-19th in Camp Hill, PA, right outside of Harrisburg. Camp Hill is a beautiful and historic residential area. Last year I received 1st Place at the Quick Draw and the People's Choice Award during the main exhibition. The previous year I received Best of Show.

Plein Air Easton takes place July 15th-21st in Easton, MD, on the Eastern Shore. Artists from all over the world paint all of Talbot County as well as the beautiful little town of Easton. I have received both the award for Best Architectural Painting (pictured above) as well as the Vanishing Landscape Award. I hope you can come to one or both of these wonderful events and see some beautiful artwork created on the spot.

Crossing Denali, oil on linen, 24"x36"

This female Grizzly was in Denali National Park on the way to Mt. McKinley. You can only get to this part of the park by bus or on foot. As close as this bear was to us, I was thankful that I was on the bus. When the bear was spotted, everybody rushed to the one side of the bus to get a better look; I thought the bus was going to tip over. We watched and photographed the bear as she lumbered down the hill and out of sight. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget.

Crossing Denali is full of beautiful texture with a combination of thick and thin brush strokes and palette knife work. Just like Alaska, the colors are vivid and cannot be fully represented with a digital image, or even in print. The size of this oil painting (24"x36") makes it a beautiful center-piece for hanging over a fireplace or couch. Different framing options that would suit your interior atmosphere are available. Contact Jason today and bring a little bit of wild Alaska into your home.
